Extended Detection & Response
XDR: connect signals and contain attacks deliberately
XDR correlates telemetry from endpoints, identities, email, cloud and networks. Its value comes from faster investigation and controlled response, not merely from collecting more product data.

Assessing XDR in technical and operational terms
Coverage
The essential question is which attack paths become visible end to end. A pilot should connect identity abuse, endpoint activity, cloud events and communication channels through realistic scenarios.
Correlation and context
A unified incident view should explain cause, affected assets and sequence. Proprietary signals can be valuable, while open interfaces remain important for existing tools and future change.
Guarded response
Isolation, account suspension and artefact blocking can limit damage but may stop business processes. Automation needs approval levels, exclusions, rollback and tested emergency operation.
Relationship with SIEM
XDR does not universally replace SIEM. XDR often excels at product-native detection and response; SIEM remains useful for broad sources, custom correlation, long-term evidence and cross-team workflows.
Decision criteria at a glance
| Criterion | Assessment question | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Which prioritised attack paths does the solution demonstrably cover? | Test scenario with a complete event chain and known gaps. |
| Response safety | Which actions may run automatically, with approval or never? | Approval matrix, exclusions, rollback test and emergency procedure. |
| Integration | How do cases, context and evidence enter existing workflows? | Validated API, ticketing and SIEM integration with data ownership. |
From assessment to reliable operations
Define scenarios
Prioritised attack paths, current controls and measurable pilot objectives are agreed.
Validate telemetry
Sensor coverage, data quality, timing, identity context and integrations are tested.
Exercise response
Manual and automated actions are tested with approvals, rollback and documented limits.
Adopt operations
Triage, ownership, handoffs, licence use and effectiveness metrics become routine.
Concrete outcomes
- Coverage matrix for prioritised attack paths
- Pilot report with measurements and documented gaps
- Response catalogue with approvals and rollback
- Integration design for SIEM, ticketing and identities
- Operating model with owners, runbooks and metrics
Important limitation
XDR cannot compensate for missing sensors or unclear authority to respond. Cross-vendor coverage, data export and licence implications must be tested in your environment; marketing claims are not sufficient evidence.
